Partial Hospitalization Programs in Tennessee and Kentucky
Partial Hospitalization Programs in Tennessee and Kentucky
Comprehensive daytime treatment for addiction and co-occurring mental health needs, with the flexibility to return home or to supportive housing each evening.
Partial hospitalization is one of the most structured forms of outpatient addiction treatment. It is designed for people who need frequent clinical contact, therapeutic accountability, and coordinated behavioral health support, but who are stable enough to spend evenings outside a residential facility. At Tulip Hill Healthcare, PHP treatment is built around individualized care rather than a one-size-fits-all schedule.
Clinical teams across the Tulip Hill Healthcare network may include licensed therapists, psychiatric providers, nurses, case managers, and addiction treatment professionals who collaborate on each client’s treatment plan. Depending on clinical need, treatment may incorporate cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, trauma-informed care, psychiatric services, medication management when appropriate, relapse-prevention work, family involvement, recovery education, and wellness-focused programming.
Group therapy is a central part of many PHP programs because it gives clients repeated opportunities to practice communication, accountability, emotional regulation, and relapse-prevention skills in a supportive setting. Individual therapy provides a more private space to address personal triggers, substance use patterns, trauma, grief, mental health symptoms, relationships, motivation, and long-term recovery goals.
PHP can also provide an important bridge between higher and lower levels of care. Some clients enter PHP after medical detox or residential treatment, while others begin PHP when an assessment shows that they need more structure than intensive outpatient or standard outpatient care. As stability improves, the treatment team can help clients transition into IOP, outpatient therapy, medication management, peer recovery support, or other continuing-care services.
Tulip Hill Healthcare serves clients through treatment locations in Tennessee and Kentucky. Admissions can help review current symptoms, substance use history, mental health needs, living environment, insurance benefits, and location preferences to determine whether PHP is appropriate and which program may be the best fit.
What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program?
A partial hospitalization program, commonly called PHP, is a highly structured level of addiction and mental health treatment that provides intensive clinical support during the day without requiring clients to live at the treatment facility overnight. PHP is often used as a step down from residential treatment or as a step up from a less intensive outpatient program when someone needs more structure, monitoring, and therapeutic support.
During PHP, clients typically participate in several hours of treatment on scheduled days each week. Programming may include individual therapy, group counseling, psychiatric services, medication management when clinically appropriate, relapse-prevention education, trauma-informed care, life-skills development, family support, and treatment for co-occurring mental health conditions.
How PHP Fits Into the Continuum of Care
PHP sits between residential treatment and lower-intensity outpatient care. It provides more structure and clinical contact than a traditional outpatient program while allowing clients to return home or to supportive housing after treatment each day.
This level of care can help clients practice recovery skills in real-world settings while continuing to receive frequent professional support. The goal is to maintain stability, strengthen coping skills, reduce relapse risk, and prepare for a gradual transition to greater independence.
PHP may be a good fit for people who need significant structure and clinical support but do not require 24-hour residential supervision. It is often recommended when a person is medically stable enough to live outside a residential setting but still needs frequent therapy, psychiatric care, recovery education, and accountability.
Some clients enter PHP after completing medical detox or residential treatment. Others may begin at the PHP level if their symptoms, substance use history, mental health needs, and living environment indicate that intensive daytime care is appropriate.
PHP May Be Appropriate for Someone Who:
Has completed detox and no longer needs 24/7 medical monitoring
Needs more support than standard outpatient treatment provides
Is stepping down from residential addiction treatment
Has a safe and supportive place to live outside treatment hours
Can participate consistently in a structured daytime schedule
Needs treatment for addiction and co-occurring mental health concerns
Benefits from frequent therapy and clinical accountability
Needs help strengthening relapse-prevention and coping skills
When a Higher Level of Care May Be Needed
PHP is not appropriate for every situation. Someone experiencing severe withdrawal, acute medical instability, significant safety concerns, or a need for round-the-clock supervision may require medical detox, inpatient care, or residential treatment before transitioning into PHP.
A clinical assessment helps determine the safest and most appropriate level of care based on substance use history, withdrawal risk, mental health symptoms, physical health, home environment, recovery support, and ability to participate in treatment.
Benefits of a Partial Hospitalization Program
PHP combines intensive treatment with greater independence than residential care. This structure can be especially helpful for clients who are ready to practice recovery skills outside treatment hours but still need frequent clinical support to maintain stability.
✓
Intensive Clinical Support
Clients receive frequent therapeutic contact and structured programming throughout the week, helping the care team identify setbacks early and adjust treatment as needs change.
⌂
More Independence
Because clients return home or to supportive housing after treatment, PHP creates opportunities to apply coping skills, routines, boundaries, and relapse-prevention strategies in everyday life.
◎
Dual Diagnosis Care
PHP can address addiction and co-occurring mental health concerns together, helping reduce the cycle in which psychiatric symptoms and substance use reinforce one another.
↗
Step-Down Support
For clients leaving residential treatment, PHP can preserve structure and accountability while gradually increasing independence and preparing for IOP or outpatient care.
What Clients Work on During PHP
PHP is not limited to attending therapy sessions. Treatment is designed to help clients build a practical recovery plan that can hold up outside the clinical setting. Common areas of focus include:
Identifying personal relapse triggers and early warning signs
Managing cravings and high-risk situations
Strengthening emotional regulation and distress tolerance
Developing healthier communication and relationship patterns
Addressing anxiety, depression, trauma, and other mental health symptoms
Rebuilding daily structure, sleep habits, and wellness routines
Improving decision-making, boundaries, and accountability
Creating a realistic continuing-care and discharge plan
What Is the Typical PHP Schedule?
A PHP schedule is designed to provide substantial treatment structure while allowing clients to return home or to supportive housing in the evening. Exact schedules vary by facility, individual treatment plan, insurance authorization, and clinical need, but clients should generally expect PHP to occupy a significant portion of the day on multiple days each week.
The schedule is intentionally structured. Consistent attendance helps clients build routine, remain accountable to treatment goals, and receive enough therapeutic repetition to strengthen new coping skills. Programming may rotate between process groups, psychoeducation, individual sessions, psychiatric appointments, relapse-prevention work, family involvement, and wellness or life-skills activities.
Because PHP is more intensive than standard outpatient treatment, full-time work or school can be difficult during this level of care. Some clients arrange reduced schedules, medical leave, or temporary changes in responsibilities while they focus on stabilization and recovery. Admissions can explain the expected schedule for the specific program before treatment begins.
Example of a Typical PHP Day
Part of the Day
Example Activity
Morning
Check-in, recovery goals, group therapy, or clinical education
Late Morning
Individual therapy, psychiatric services, or medication management when appropriate
Midday
Lunch, structured break, or wellness-focused activity
Progress review, recovery planning, and preparation to return home or to supportive housing
How Long Does PHP Last?
The overall length of PHP varies from person to person. Some clients may participate for several weeks, while others may need a longer period before stepping down to intensive outpatient or standard outpatient care.
Length of stay is typically influenced by clinical progress, symptom stability, relapse risk, co-occurring mental health needs, treatment participation, home support, and insurance authorization. The treatment team regularly reviews progress and adjusts recommendations as needs change.
What Is the Difference Between Residential Rehab and PHP?
Residential rehab and PHP can both provide intensive addiction treatment, but the biggest difference is where clients live and how much supervision is available outside therapy hours. Residential treatment provides 24-hour structure in a live-in treatment environment, while PHP allows clients to return home or to supportive housing after completing treatment for the day.
Residential care is generally better suited for people who need a highly controlled recovery environment, around-the-clock support, or separation from triggers and unstable living situations. PHP is often appropriate when someone is medically and psychiatrically stable enough to live outside the facility but still needs intensive daytime treatment.
May step down to IOP or outpatient care as progress continues
Choosing the Right Level of Care
The right level of care depends on more than the severity of substance use alone. Clinicians also consider withdrawal risk, physical health, mental health symptoms, relapse history, home environment, family support, motivation, ability to participate in treatment, and previous treatment experiences.
Someone may move through several levels of care during recovery. For example, treatment may begin with medical detox, continue with residential rehab, transition into PHP, and then step down to intensive outpatient or standard outpatient services. This gradual approach can provide consistent support while helping clients build greater independence over time.
PHP vs. Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
PHP and IOP are both outpatient levels of care, but PHP generally provides more treatment hours, more frequent clinical contact, and a higher degree of structure. IOP is often appropriate once a client has achieved greater stability and can manage more time independently between treatment sessions.
Often follows PHP as the client continues progressing
How Clinicians Decide Between PHP and IOP
The recommendation is based on clinical need rather than convenience alone. The treatment team may consider recent substance use, relapse history, cravings, psychiatric symptoms, medication needs, ability to remain safe outside treatment, family or housing support, motivation, previous treatment response, and the amount of structure needed to maintain progress.

From Detox to Continued Treatment
Detox is typically the beginning of treatment rather than the end. Once a client is medically stable, the clinical team can help determine an appropriate next level of care based on individual needs, progress, living environment, mental health concerns, and recovery goals.
Depending on the individual, continued care may include residential treatment, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient treatment, standard outpatient services, therapy, medication management, or other recovery resources. Frequently Asked Questions About Partial Hospitalization Programs
Understanding how PHP works can make it easier to decide whether this level of care fits your current recovery needs. The answers below cover treatment intensity, schedules, living arrangements, mental health services, insurance, and what happens before and after PHP.
A partial hospitalization program, commonly called PHP, is a highly structured level of addiction and behavioral health treatment that takes place during the day without requiring clients to live at the treatment facility overnight. PHP provides more clinical support and treatment time than lower-intensity outpatient programs while allowing clients to return home or to supportive housing after programming.
PHP may be appropriate for someone who is medically stable but still needs frequent therapy, clinical monitoring, recovery education, psychiatric support, and accountability. It is often considered for people stepping down from residential treatment, people who need more support than IOP or standard outpatient care, and clients managing both substance use and co-occurring mental health concerns. A clinical assessment is used to determine whether PHP is an appropriate level of care.
Someone experiencing significant withdrawal risk, acute medical instability, serious safety concerns, or a need for round-the-clock supervision may require medical detox, inpatient treatment, or residential care before entering PHP. The appropriate recommendation depends on substance use history, current symptoms, physical and mental health, relapse risk, and the safety of the person’s living environment.
A typical day may include a clinical check-in, group therapy, individual counseling, recovery education, relapse-prevention work, coping-skills development, psychiatric services, medication management when clinically appropriate, trauma-informed treatment, life-skills work, and planning for the time spent outside treatment. The exact schedule depends on the facility and individualized treatment plan.
PHP generally requires a substantial daytime commitment on multiple days each week. Exact treatment hours and days vary by program, clinical need, progress, and insurance authorization. Admissions can explain the expected weekly schedule for the specific Tulip Hill Healthcare program being considered.
There is no single length of stay that is appropriate for everyone. Some clients may participate for several weeks, while others may need additional time before transitioning to a lower level of care. Length of treatment can depend on symptom stability, relapse risk, treatment participation, mental health needs, progress toward goals, home support, and insurance authorization.
Do clients live at the treatment center during PHP?
No. Unlike residential treatment, PHP does not generally require clients to live at the treatment facility. Clients participate in structured daytime treatment and return home or to an appropriate supportive living environment afterward. Because evenings are spent outside the program, having a stable and recovery-supportive environment can be an important part of determining whether PHP is appropriate.
What is the difference between PHP and residential rehab?
The primary difference is the living arrangement and level of supervision outside treatment hours. Residential rehab provides a live-in environment with 24-hour structure and support. PHP provides intensive daytime treatment but allows clients to leave after programming. Residential treatment may be more appropriate when someone needs greater supervision, separation from triggers, or a more controlled recovery environment.
Both PHP and an intensive outpatient program, or IOP, allow clients to live outside the treatment facility. PHP is generally the more intensive option, with more treatment hours, greater structure, and more frequent clinical contact. IOP may be appropriate when a client has achieved greater stability and is ready to manage more independence while continuing structured treatment.
Can PHP treat addiction and mental health conditions at the same time?
Yes. PHP can incorporate dual diagnosis treatment for substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health concerns. Depending on individual needs, treatment may address anxiety, depression, trauma-related symptoms, mood concerns, emotional regulation, and other behavioral health issues alongside addiction recovery.
Services vary by program and treatment plan, but PHP may include individual therapy, professionally facilitated group therapy, cognitive behavioral approaches, trauma-informed care, relapse-prevention education, family support, life-skills development, recovery education, and psychiatric services. Treatment is selected according to each client’s clinical needs and recovery goals.
Medication management may be included when clinically appropriate. Psychiatric and medical providers can evaluate symptoms, review existing medications, monitor response, and make treatment recommendations within the scope of the individual program. Medication decisions are based on each client’s medical and behavioral health needs.
Family education or therapeutic support may be incorporated when appropriate. Family involvement can help improve communication, establish healthier boundaries, increase understanding of addiction and mental health, and prepare loved ones to support recovery after treatment. The extent of family participation depends on the treatment plan, clinical recommendations, and client consent.
PHP requires a significant daytime commitment, so maintaining a traditional full-time work or school schedule can be difficult. Some clients arrange reduced hours, temporary leave, or other accommodations while focusing on treatment. As clients become more stable and transition to IOP or outpatient care, balancing treatment with work, school, and family responsibilities may become easier.
Requirements vary by facility because clients do not stay overnight. Admissions can provide specific instructions before the first day of treatment, including guidance about identification, insurance information, medications, meals, personal items, and anything that should not be brought into the program.
Many commercial insurance plans may provide benefits for partial hospitalization when treatment is medically necessary, but coverage varies by policy. Network status, deductibles, coinsurance, authorization requirements, clinical criteria, and benefit limits can all affect coverage. Tulip Hill Healthcare can confidentially verify benefits and explain available coverage before admission.
The admissions team can review insurance benefits directly and help explain what the plan indicates about PHP coverage, authorization, and potential out-of-pocket responsibility. Insurance verification does not guarantee payment, but it can provide a clearer picture of benefits before treatment begins.
As clients become more stable and require less intensive support, they may transition to IOP, standard outpatient treatment, individual therapy, psychiatric care, medication management, peer recovery resources, aftercare, or alumni support. Continuing-care planning is intended to preserve treatment progress while gradually increasing independence.
Yes. PHP commonly serves as a step-down level of care after medical detox or residential treatment when a client no longer needs 24-hour supervision but still benefits from intensive structure. Moving gradually through levels of care can help maintain clinical support while the client practices recovery skills with increasing independence.
The process begins by contacting admissions. The team can discuss current concerns, treatment history, substance use, mental health needs, location preferences, and insurance information. A clinical assessment helps determine whether PHP is appropriate or whether another level of care may be safer or more effective.

I don’t even know where to start. This facility has been absolutely amazing to me. When entering a rehab, you never think “this will be an amazing experience,” but it was. All the staff has been so loving, accepting, and ready to take you in with open arms. If anyone needs the help I needed, I can promise you that Tosha, Shay, Asia, and Billy will make you feel safe and secure during your stay! Big thanks to all the nurses and other staff as well for making this my home away from home for 28 days. You were all the absolute best!
This place is so special. The staff is the gem here. They relate, they understand and they genuinely want to help. If you or a loved one is in active addiction or suffer from mental health, pick up the phone and call them, they will help. Billy, Tasha, JoyLee, Asia, Shae and everyone else at the Serenity Wellness, thank you for saving my life. Ill never forget you.
Serenity has the best staff members and they truly care about everyone. Staff and clients became like family. I would definitely recommend serenity to anyone that is searching for help!
This is a great program. I came in not knowing anything about recovery and not knowing what I was walking into. The staff is amazing, the things you get taught are great, the therapists are great as well. Anything that I needed they were there for me. Highly Recommend!!
I am so thankful for Tulip Hill. This is the first place I have been that truly cares for each individual that walks through the doors. If you are trying to find a place to help. This is it.
I was nervous and anxious to check myself into treatment. It was not what I expected but in the best way. The counselors, recovery coaches, nurses, and care navigator reliably helped me take care of things at home and gently teach me about addiction and the benefits of AA. Our group sessions and meetings have been extremely enlightening. I have grown so much and trust their advice regarding after care. The facility is also very well kept, the food is great, and the setting is truly serene. It has been a place that gives me hope and confidence in true recovery. Every one here deserves a raise!

I had a great experience at LAC. The staff was professional, knowledgeable, and easy to work with from start to finish. They communicated clearly, treated me with respect, and made my entire stay comfortable. You can tell they take pride in their work and genuinely care about their clients. I would definitely recommend LAC to anyone looking for quality service and a team you can trust.

Thankyou all so much for the love and support & offering the tools to make me successful in this journey of Recovery. Much Love, Collin K.
First time in treatment and could not have asked for a better experience! The facilities only have 15/16 clients at each of the two facilities so you truly get a hands on approach to recover. Also, 99 % of staff have been through recovery so they are able to relate to all the struggles!
The most best place to go for detox the staff are so awesome and they make sure you are well taking care of while you are there the amenities are awesome as well
The staff, techs, and medical were all professional and caring. Tuliphill as a whole was very important in my recovery and has given me a new hope. I would recommend this facility to anyone that is in need of help.
This is a beautiful location with incredibly supportive, qualified, patient, and understanding staff. During my time here, I experienced a deep sense of peace and rest that I hadn’t felt in a long time. Each day, I was guided through meaningful process groups that helped me uncover and begin working through the underlying issues beneath my addiction to alcohol.
I woke up many mornings feeling safe, rested, and genuinely hopeful about my future—something I didn’t think was possible before coming here.
At the same time, I was encouraged to do the hard work. The staff challenged me—in the best way—to start building healthy habits and practicing behaviors that support long-term sobriety. They consistently met me where I was, while also giving me the respectful space I needed to approach difficult topics at my own pace.
This balance made all the difference.
Five stars. I leave here feeling capable, confident, and equipped for my sober future.
Great facility. Amazing staff. Best decision I made in my whole life. Prepared me very well with the tools I’ll need to go out into the world and take the best care for myself.
Fantastic organization comprised of caring, qualified individuals. Grateful to have quality care in Tennessee and Kentucky, for people all over the United States.
Going to Tulip Hill Health Care was the best decision I’ve ever made for myself. I came in struggling not just with addiction, but with the underlying mental health issues that fueled my drinking/using. The clinicians here are truly incredible, they are masters in their field and genuinely care about helping you heal, not just get sober.
What made the difference for me was how much they focused on the why behind my addiction. They helped me work through my anxiety and depression in a way no other program had before. The groups were supportive, the staff was compassionate, and I never once felt judged.
Today, I’m living a life I never thought possible, and I owe so much of that to Tulip Hill. If you’re scared or unsure about treatment, just know this place can change your life the way it changed mine.

As a professional in the behavioral health and recovery field, I have had the opportunity to collaborate with Tulip Hill Healthcare and see firsthand the quality of care they provide. What sets them apart is the balance they strike between clinical excellence and genuine compassion. Their team approaches each client as an individual, not a diagnosis, and consistently demonstrates professionalism, integrity, and empathy.
I’ve observed how their groups blend evidence-based practices with real-world application. Clients are not only educated about addiction and mental health but are also equipped with tools that can be used beyond treatment. Their staff works hard to create an environment where accountability and hope coexist—something that is essential for sustainable recovery.
Tulip Hill is also strong in continuity of care. They prioritize aftercare planning and ensure clients leave with structured support and resources, which is often the difference between short-term sobriety and long-term recovery.
In my experience, Tulip Hill Healthcare is a trusted partner in this work. I have no hesitation recommending them to clients and families seeking a program that is both clinically sound and deeply human in its approach.

Tulip Hill saved my cousins life. When he got there he was broken and lost. Now his life is rejuvenated. The amount of one on one therapy he got, mixed with his process group was exactly the combination he needed to walk out a new man. Now he’s helping others and a productive member of society. Everything from our first call with Jake was top notch. God Bless Tulip Hill
