When Stress Becomes Your Coping Strategy: 5 Signs It's Time to Rethink How You Unwind

How to recognize when a familiar way of unwinding is making stress harder to manage, and what to try instead.

On This Page

At the end of a difficult day, reaching for something that promises immediate relief can feel almost automatic.

Maybe it's a glass of wine after work. Maybe it's using cannabis to disconnect from racing thoughts or relying on a sleep medication more frequently than prescribed.

The behavior itself may not initially seem concerning. After all, everyone needs ways to unwind.

But there is an important difference between choosing something enjoyable and feeling increasingly dependent on it to manage uncomfortable emotions.

That distinction matters because the relationship between stress, emotional health, and substance use is more complicated than many people realize.

Research from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) identifies chronic stress as a shared risk factor for mental health conditions and substance use disorders. Stress can influence brain systems involved in motivation, reward, and behavioral control, while repeated substance use may affect the way people respond to future stress.

The encouraging part is that recognizing these patterns can create opportunities for meaningful change.

Why stress can make certain coping habits harder to break

Stress is not inherently harmful. In fact, the body's stress response helps us respond to challenges, navigate uncertainty, and protect ourselves from danger.

When we perceive a threat, the sympathetic nervous system becomes more active, and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis helps coordinate the body's hormonal response.

These biological processes influence alertness, energy, and attention.

However, prolonged stress can affect sleep, emotional regulation, and decision-making.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse has documented how stress interacts with brain circuits involved in reward and motivation. These interactions may increase vulnerability to problematic substance use in some individuals.

Consider someone who begins drinking after work because it temporarily reduces tension.

Initially, the behavior may feel like a convenient way to transition from a demanding workday to a more relaxed evening.

Over time, however, the person may begin associating emotional relief with alcohol rather than developing additional strategies for managing stress.

The brain can learn to anticipate the short-term effects of a substance, making the behavior increasingly automatic.

This does not mean that every person who drinks after work will develop an alcohol use disorder. Substance use disorders involve multiple interacting factors, including genetics, environment, mental health, patterns of use, and individual vulnerability.

But understanding the role of emotional reinforcement can help explain why some coping habits become difficult to change.

5 signs your coping habits may be working against you

Recognizing an unhealthy pattern does not require waiting until a crisis occurs.

Sometimes the earliest indicators are subtle changes in how a person responds to everyday stress.

1. You feel uncomfortable relaxing without a substance

One potential warning sign is believing that relaxation, sleep, or social comfort is impossible without alcohol, cannabis, or another substance.

Someone may begin to anticipate a drink before an evening gathering or feel anxious about sleeping without a sedative.

The concern is not simply the desire to relax. It is the growing belief that emotional comfort depends on a particular substance.

This pattern deserves attention, especially when use becomes more frequent or difficult to control.

2. You use substances to avoid specific emotions

Stress, sadness, loneliness, and frustration are uncomfortable, but they can also provide meaningful information about our experiences.

When substances repeatedly become the primary way of escaping these emotions, the underlying difficulties may remain unresolved.

For example, someone experiencing persistent relationship conflict might drink to avoid uncomfortable conversations.

The temporary relief may reduce immediate distress, but the original problem remains.

Over time, emotional avoidance can interfere with communication, problem-solving, and the development of healthier coping skills.

3. Your sleep and mood are becoming less predictable

Sleep and emotional health influence one another.

Although alcohol can initially make some people feel sleepy, it may disrupt normal sleep patterns and contribute to poorer sleep quality.

Similarly, some substances may temporarily alter anxiety or mood while contributing to emotional difficulties during intoxication, withdrawal, or repeated use.

Changes in sleep, irritability, or emotional stability do not automatically indicate a substance use disorder.

However, when these changes occur alongside increasing substance use, discussing them with a healthcare professional may help identify contributing factors.

4. You need more of a substance to achieve the same effect

Tolerance occurs when repeated exposure to a substance reduces its effects, leading some people to use larger amounts to achieve a similar result.

Tolerance alone does not establish a substance use disorder. It can also develop during appropriately supervised medical treatment.

Nevertheless, increasing use, difficulty reducing consumption, and continued use despite negative consequences are important reasons to seek professional guidance.

For people who have developed physical dependence on alcohol or certain sedatives, abruptly stopping can be dangerous. Medical evaluation is important before making significant changes.

5. Your coping habits are beginning to affect your relationships or responsibilities

One of the clearest indicators that a behavior deserves attention is its impact on everyday functioning.

Perhaps someone begins withdrawing from friends, missing commitments, struggling at work, or concealing how frequently they use a substance.

They may recognize that the behavior is creating problems but continue because it provides temporary emotional relief.

This is an important distinction: a coping strategy can feel helpful in the moment while becoming harmful over time.

When a behavior repeatedly interferes with relationships, health, responsibilities, or personal goals, professional support can help clarify what is happening.

The connection between emotional health and substance use

Mental health conditions and substance use disorders often overlap, but the relationship is not always straightforward.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), approximately 21.2 million U.S. adults experienced both a mental illness and a substance use disorder in 2024.

Some individuals use substances in an attempt to manage symptoms of anxiety, depression, or trauma.

In other cases, substance use contributes to psychological symptoms or makes an existing condition more difficult to manage.

Shared risk factors, including genetics, chronic stress, and adverse experiences, may also contribute to both conditions.

This means that the presence of anxiety and substance use does not necessarily establish which problem developed first.

It also helps explain why focusing on only one issue may leave important treatment needs unaddressed.

For people who meet the diagnostic criteria for both a mental health condition and a substance use disorder, integrated care can address both conditions within a coordinated treatment plan.

SAMHSA recommends integrated approaches because mental health symptoms, substance use patterns, and recovery needs can influence one another.

How to build healthier ways of responding to stress

Developing healthier coping strategies does not mean eliminating stress or expecting yourself to remain calm in every situation.

It means expanding the range of responses available when difficult emotions arise.

The following approaches can support emotional well-being, although they are not substitutes for professional treatment when a substance use disorder or significant mental health condition is present.

Create a pause between emotion and action.

When you notice an urge to escape an uncomfortable feeling, identify what is happening before responding.

You might ask yourself: Am I anxious, lonely, exhausted, overwhelmed, or frustrated?

Naming the emotion can help clarify what kind of support or action might actually be useful.

Develop a predictable evening routine.

If substance use has become associated with the end of the workday, consider building alternative routines around that transition.

A short walk, preparing dinner, listening to music, stretching, or spending time with someone supportive can provide structure.

The goal is not to find a perfect replacement that immediately produces the same sensation. It is to develop additional ways to manage stress.

Pay attention to sleep and physical well-being.

Consistent sleep opportunities, regular meals, movement, and opportunities for rest can support overall emotional health.

However, persistent insomnia, severe anxiety, or withdrawal symptoms may require medical evaluation rather than lifestyle changes alone.

Practice tolerating uncomfortable emotions.

Mindfulness and other awareness-based practices may help some people notice thoughts and feelings without reacting immediately.

For individuals who have experienced trauma, certain exercises may feel uncomfortable. A qualified mental health professional can help identify appropriate alternatives.

Build support before a crisis develops.

People do not need to wait until substance use becomes severe to seek help.

A therapist, primary care clinician, addiction specialist, or other qualified professional can help assess symptoms and identify appropriate resources.

Supportive relationships and peer communities may also play an important role.

Why whole-person wellness sometimes requires clinical care

Wellness practices can provide meaningful support, but they have limits.

Someone experiencing mild everyday stress may benefit from changes in sleep habits, physical activity, or relaxation routines.

A person experiencing alcohol dependence, severe depression, trauma-related symptoms, or another significant condition may require a more comprehensive approach.

Treatment can include evidence-based psychotherapy, medications when indicated, medical supervision, peer support, and ongoing recovery planning.

The appropriate level of care depends on individual needs and a professional assessment.

This is particularly important when mental health symptoms and substance use occur together.

The clinical perspective behind whole-person treatment is that emotional health, physical health, substance use, and social circumstances should be considered together rather than in isolation.

Organizations such as Tulip Hill Healthcare, a network of addiction treatment and behavioral health providers, operate within this broader continuum of care through affiliated treatment facilities.

The larger principle applies well beyond any single provider: effective support should respond to the person as a whole, while remaining grounded in established medical and psychological practices.

The takeaway

Not every coping habit is harmful, and experiencing stress does not mean someone is developing a substance use disorder.

The important question is whether a behavior continues to support well-being or has begun creating additional difficulties.

When relaxation becomes difficult without a substance, emotional avoidance becomes routine, or everyday responsibilities begin to suffer, those patterns deserve attention.

Recognizing them early can create opportunities to develop healthier coping strategies and seek professional guidance when appropriate.

Emotional wellness is not about never feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or uncomfortable.

It is about developing the flexibility, support, and skills to respond to those experiences in ways that protect long-term health.

Frequently Asked Questions About Stress and Coping

How can I tell whether I am using alcohol to cope with stress?

Consider whether drinking has become your main way to relax, whether you feel uncomfortable without it, or whether it is affecting sleep, relationships, or responsibilities. These patterns do not establish a diagnosis, but they can be reasons to talk with a healthcare professional.

Is having a drink after work always unhealthy?

Not necessarily. A single behavior does not determine whether someone has a substance use disorder. Frequency, amount, reasons for drinking, ability to choose other coping strategies, and effects on health and daily life all matter.

Can stress increase the risk of substance use problems?

Chronic stress can influence sleep, emotional regulation, and brain systems involved in reward and motivation. It may increase vulnerability to problematic substance use in some people, alongside other biological and environmental factors.

Why can alcohol make anxiety or sleep worse?

Although alcohol may initially feel calming or sedating, it can disrupt sleep and contribute to anxiety or mood changes as its effects wear off. Persistent symptoms deserve a professional assessment.

What are healthier ways to unwind without substances?

Try a predictable evening routine, physical movement, regular meals, supportive conversation, or a brief pause to name the emotion you are experiencing. The aim is to build several coping options rather than depend on one source of relief.

When should I seek professional help for stress and substance use?

Consider seeking support when use becomes difficult to control, increases over time, or affects your health, relationships, sleep, work, or responsibilities. You do not need to wait for a crisis to ask for an assessment.

Is it safe to stop drinking or taking sedatives suddenly?

Not always. Abruptly stopping alcohol or certain sedatives after physical dependence has developed can be dangerous. Consult a qualified medical professional before making significant changes, especially if you have experienced withdrawal symptoms.

Can mental health conditions and substance use disorders be treated together?

Yes. When both conditions are present, integrated care can address substance use and mental health concerns within a coordinated treatment plan tailored to the individual.

This is a beautiful location with incredibly supportive, qualified, patient, and understanding staff. During my time here, I experienced a deep sense of peace and rest that I hadn’t felt in a long time. Each day, I was guided through meaningful process groups that helped me uncover and begin working through the underlying issues beneath my addiction to alcohol. I woke up many mornings feeling safe, rested, and genuinely hopeful about my future—something I didn’t think was possible before coming here. At the same time, I was encouraged to do the hard work. The staff challenged me—in the best way—to start building healthy habits and practicing behaviors that support long-term sobriety. They consistently met me where I was, while also giving me the respectful space I needed to approach difficult topics at my own pace. This balance made all the difference. Five stars. I leave here feeling capable, confident, and equipped for my sober future. Thank you, truly—thank you.

As a professional in the behavioral health and recovery field, I have had the opportunity to collaborate with Tulip Hill Healthcare and see firsthand the quality of care they provide. What sets them apart is the balance they strike between clinical excellence and genuine compassion. Their team approaches each client as an individual, not a diagnosis, and consistently demonstrates professionalism, integrity, and empathy. I’ve observed how their groups blend evidence-based practices with real-world application. Clients are not only educated about addiction and mental health but are also equipped with tools that can be used beyond treatment. Their staff works hard to create an environment where accountability and hope coexist—something that is essential for sustainable recovery. Tulip Hill is also strong in continuity of care. They prioritize aftercare planning and ensure clients leave with structured support and resources, which is often the difference between short-term sobriety and long-term recovery. In my experience, Tulip Hill Healthcare is a trusted partner in this work. I have no hesitation recommending them to clients and families seeking a program that is both clinically sound and deeply human in its approach.
