Addiction in Kentucky: How Big is the Problem?

The drug crisis in America affects every part of the country, but it continues to impact individuals and families in Kentucky to a tragic degree not seen elsewhere.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration groups states in this part of the country into a region that includes Kentucky,  Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

This is how Kentucky compares with other states in the region and the country as a whole. Kentucky has:

    • The highest rate of Substance Use Disorder in the region, higher than the national average.
    • The highest rate of tobacco use in the region, 48% greater than the national average.
    • The highest rate of Opioid Use Disorder in the region by far81% higher than the U.S. average.
    • One of the highest rates of pain reliever misuse in the country.
    • The second-highest rate of methamphetamine use in the region, 70% higher than the national average.
    • The second-highest rates of cocaine use in the region.
    • The second-highest rate of hallucinogen use in the region.

The consequences of the drug crisis in Kentucky are heartbreaking, manifesting as accidental drug poisonings and needless deaths. Between December 2023 and November 2024, there were a predicted 1591 fatal overdoses in the Bluegrass State. 79% involved fentanyl and 55% involved meth, highlighting the two biggest drug threats in the state.

But these statistics also highlight the urgent need for quality drug and alcohol treatment centers in Kentucky. Rehab programs that provide comprehensive evidence-based recovery services are invaluable local resources that save lives and support anyone whose life has turned upside down by the disease of addiction.

That’s where Tulip Hill Healthcare comes in.

I was a client at Lexington Addiction Center for a month of PHP. My experience with LAC was tremendous. They helped me get back on my feet after a relapse and provided me with care that I’ve not experienced in any other treatment setting. The clinicians, TCM, medical staff and techs were all very helpful throughout my experience. This team is really about loving people back to life and it shows as soon as you step inside and are greeted by tons of smiling faces from staff and clients alike. I have never felt as confident in my ability to maintain a healthy life of sobriety as I do now from completing this program. Thank you LAC!

LAC is 100% guaranteed not the place to be nor are they what they put themselves out to be… im here to tell the REAL truth about this place. They have the smiles and sweet talk but in reality they have grown men in there that act like grown lil ladies, they’re unprofessional and disrespectful as all get out, I got cussed out by staff and i mean profanity was HEAVY but they were absolutely quick to discharge me instead of handling their staff, I was the one who had to leave while the same staff is currently still working there. I've been threatened by staff multiple times and fights also occurred by staff, there were people there using/abusing drugs inside the facility, whenever id ask for help with anything that was actually important at the time it was like they weren’t even trying to listen it just went through one ear and out the other, everyone there was just putting on this big facade as if going there was the best option when in reality its not.. I never liked going to recovery centers/rehab in general and this place just proved every point as to why i never liked going. I was honestly just seeking help trying to actually stay on the right path but it was too much drama and arguing going on which caused me to stress and when i stress I tend relapse so LAC was no help whatsoever. Not to mention all this was recent. ( April 23, 2025 ). I absolutely have no reason to lie about anything, if you dont believe me go give it a try yourself i understand me telling you isnt enough for most but i was recently there and it was most definitely my worst experience.

Being in a safe space with people who you can relate to is a must when you are going through the process of recovery. I felt very welcomed the moment I walked into the center. The staff support is exceptional and they truly care about your recovery. As an inpatient client living away from my family I felt a lot of love and support from the clients in my home (away from home). This facility has the tools needed to help and keep you be and stay successful on your journey. Give them a call with any questions and see if they can help you with your personal journey to your new you!!

Comprehensive Care Tailored to Your Needs

Types of Addictions Treated at Tulip Hill Healthcare in Kentucky

At Tulip Hill Healthcare, we understand that addiction is a complex, multifaceted condition that requires personalized, compassionate care. We specialize in treating a wide range of substance use disorders, each with its unique challenges and treatment approaches.

    Alcohol Use Disorder

Prevalence: Approximately 39% of adults in Kentucky reported alcohol use in the past 30 days, with 19% engaging in binge drinking during that period.

Challenges: Alcohol use disorder can lead to liver disease, accidents, and mental health issues. The normalization of alcohol consumption in social settings makes it difficult for someone to recognize and address their addiction.

Treatment at Tulip Hill Healthcare: Our programs include detoxification, individual and group therapy, and support for co-occurring mental health disorders. We focus on building coping strategies and promoting long-term sobriety.

    Prescription Painkiller Addiction

Prevalence: Prescription opioid misuse remains a significant issue in Kentucky, contributing to the broader opioid crisis.

Challenges: Many people start using prescription painkillers for legitimate medical reasons, but long-term use leads to tolerance, dependence, misuse, addiction, and potential overdose. The transition from prescription use to illicit opioid use is a dangerous but common progression.

Treatment at Tulip Hill Healthcare: We provide comprehensive treatment plans that include medically supervised detoxification, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and support groups to address both the physical and psychological aspects of prescription painkiller addiction.

    Heroin Addiction

Prevalence: According to data from SAMHSA, approximately 34,000 Kentucky adults have used heroin within the past year.

Challenges: Heroin use can lead to rapid physical dependence, severe withdrawal symptoms, IV usage, and a high risk of overdose. The stigma surrounding heroin use often deters some people from seeking help.

Treatment at Tulip Hill Healthcare: We offer medically-assisted treatment (MAT) using medications like Suboxone and Sublocade, combined with therapy and support groups. Our clinicians are trained to address both the physical and psychological aspects of heroin addiction.

    Cocaine Addiction

    Cocaine Addiction

Prevalence: Annually, approximately 866,000 people in Kentucky use cocaine.

Challenges: Cocaine use can lead to heart problems, seizures, and mental health issues such as anxiety and paranoia. The euphoric effects can lead to repeated use and addiction.

Treatment at Tulip Hill: Our approach includes therapy to address the psychological aspects of addiction, support groups, and relapse prevention strategies.

    Xanax and Other Benzodiazepines

Prevalence: In 2022, Kentucky saw over 1,000 emergency department visits involving benzodiazepine overdoses, with many cases involving co-use with opioids — a trend contributing to rising overdose deaths across the state.

Benzodiazepines like Xanax, Ativan, and Valium are commonly prescribed for anxiety and sleep disorders but carry a high risk of dependence, especially with long-term use.

Challenges: Benzodiazepine addiction presents unique clinical challenges. These medications affect the central nervous system and can cause significant physical dependence even when used as prescribed. Withdrawal symptoms — such as seizures, severe anxiety, and insomnia — can be dangerous or even life-threatening without medical supervision.

Many people become dependent without realizing it, especially when benzodiazepines are prescribed over extended periods or taken alongside other substances like alcohol or opioids.

Treatment at Tulip Hill Healthcare: Tulip Hill Healthcare uses a gradual, medically supervised tapering strategy to safely manage benzodiazepine withdrawal, often beginning in a detoxification setting.

    Fentanyl Addiction

Prevalence: In 2023, fentanyl was involved in 79% of Kentucky’s drug overdose fatalities.

Challenges: Fentanyl is a potent synthetic opioid, significantly more powerful than heroin or prescription opioids. Its high potency increases the risk of overdose, even with small amounts.

Treatment at Tulip Hill Healthcare: Our approach includes medically-assisted treatment (MAT) using medications like Suboxone and Sublocade, combined with therapy and support groups. We also provide education on harm reduction strategies to manage the risks associated with fentanyl use.

    Dual Diagnosis

Dual Diagnosis (Co-Occurring Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders)

Prevalence:  Many people who struggle with addiction also experience co-occurring mental health disorders, such as depression or anxiety.

Challenges: Dual diagnosis complicates treatment, as symptoms of one disorder can exacerbate the other, leading to a cycle of substance use and mental health issues.

Treatment at Tulip Hill Healthcare: We provide integrated treatment plans that simultaneously address both substance use and mental health disorders through combined therapies, medication management, and holistic support services.

Chemical dependency can take many forms, but every type of addiction wreaks havoc on your mental and physical health and makes your life unmanageable.  No matter what your substance of choice is, each of Tulip Hill Healthcare’s drug and alcohol treatment centers in Kentucky offers the services you need to achieve successful and lasting recovery.

    Inhalant Addiction

Prevalence: Nationally, over 22 million Americans aged 12 and older have used inhalants, with a significant number initiating use during adolescence.

Challenges: Inhalant abuse can lead to rapid brain damage, sudden sniffing death syndrome, and long-term cognitive impairments. The transient high and easy accessibility of household products contribute to its misuse.

Treatment at Tulip Hill Healthcare: Our approach includes neurocognitive rehabilitation, individual and group therapy, and family counseling to address the unique neurological impacts of inhalant addiction.

      Detoxification

Detoxification is the first step in the recovery process, focusing on safely managing withdrawal symptoms and removing substances from the body. Our medically supervised detox programs provide 24/7 monitoring and support to ensure client safety and comfort during this critical phase.

      Residential Rehabilitation

Residential rehabilitation offers a structured, immersive environment where you live on-site and receive intensive treatment. This program is ideal for someone with severe addiction or those who require a controlled setting to begin their recovery journey. Services include individual and group therapy, life skills training, and holistic therapies.

      Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

PHP is a highly structured program that offers intensive treatment during the day while allowing you to return home in the evenings. This option is perfect if you need a high level of care but prefer the comfort of sleeping at home. PHP includes individual therapy, group counseling, and skill-building sessions that target the root causes of addiction. Think of it as giving yourself a full-time job in recovery, with a dedicated team supporting you every step of the way.

Example: For someone facing both addiction and anxiety, PHP combines therapy to address substance use with tools to manage mental health challenges, ensuring a holistic approach to healing.

      Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

If you’re ready to maintain a level of independence while staying actively engaged in recovery, IOP might be your best fit. This program provides a flexible schedule with therapy and counseling several times a week, making it easier to balance personal responsibilities like work or family life.

IOP is like having a safety net while you rebuild your life—giving you access to professional support and peer connection without interrupting your daily routine. Our expert team helps you identify triggers, develop coping strategies, and build confidence in your ability to navigate life without substances.

      Outpatient Programs

Outpatient Programs are ideal for individuals who have completed higher levels of care, such as PHP or IOP, and are ready to continue their recovery journey with less intensive support. OP offers weekly therapy sessions, group meetings, and access to resources that help you stay on track.

Imagine this stage as a booster for your recovery—it keeps you connected to your goals and provides guidance when you need it. Whether you’re focusing on relapse prevention or simply maintaining a healthy mindset, OP is there to support you.

      Aftercare Programs

Recovery doesn’t end when treatment is over, and that’s why aftercare is so critical. At Tulip Hill Healthcare, we work with you to create a long-term plan for success. Our aftercare programs include continued therapy, relapse prevention strategies, and support groups that help you stay accountable.

Think of aftercare as a roadmap to your new life. Whether it’s weekly check-ins with a counselor or participating in community-based recovery meetings, these programs are tailored to your needs to ensure you feel confident and supported as you transition to independent living.

      About Us

Importance of Professional Treatment Versus Self-Managed Recovery

While the idea of managing recovery independently may seem appealing due to perceived convenience or cost savings, research and clinical experience consistently highlight the significant risks and lower success rates associated with self-managed recovery compared to professional treatment.

      The Risks of At-Home Detox

Detoxification is the body’s process of clearing substances, and while it is a crucial first step in recovery, it can also be the most dangerous phase if not properly managed. Attempting detox at home without medical supervision poses several serious risks:

      • Life-Threatening Withdrawal Symptoms: Substances like alcohol and benzodiazepines can cause severe withdrawal symptoms, including seizures, hallucinations, and delirium tremens, which can be fatal without medical intervention.
      • Medical Complications: Conditions such as dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, and cardiac issues are common during withdrawal and require immediate medical attention.
      • Increased Risk of Relapse: The discomfort and psychological strain of withdrawal can trigger a relapse that undermines your recovery efforts.
      • Lack of Support: Without professional guidance, you may struggle to manage cravings, triggers, and co-occurring mental health issues, increasing the likelihood of relapse.
      About Us

      The Efficacy of Professional Treatment

Engaging in a structured, medically supervised treatment program significantly enhances the chances of successful recovery:

      • Higher Success Rates: People who complete residential treatment programs are 2–3 times more likely to achieve long-term sobriety compared to those who attempt self-managed recovery.
      • Comprehensive Care: Professional treatment addresses not only the physical aspects of addiction but also the psychological and emotional components, providing a holistic approach to recovery.
      • Aftercare and Support: Continued support through aftercare programs, therapy, and support groups helps you maintain your sobriety and navigate challenges post-treatment.

Professional treatment offers a safer, more effective path to recovery, significantly improving the likelihood of long-term success. If you or a loved one is struggling with substance use, seeking professional help is a crucial step toward a healthier, sober future.

      Evidence-Based Therapies

Our treatment programs incorporate scientifically validated therapies that have proven effective in addiction recovery:

      Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Helps clients identify and modify negative thought patterns and behaviors associated with substance use.

      Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Focuses on teaching coping skills to manage stress, regulate emotions, and improve relationships.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

Assists in processing and healing from traumatic experiences that may contribute to addictive behaviors.

      Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)

Combines FDA-approved medications with counseling to alleviate withdrawal symptoms and reduce cravings, enhancing the likelihood of sustained recovery.

Air Force veterans often experience high levels of stress due to the technical and demanding nature of their roles.

      U.S. Marine Corps Veterans

Studies indicate that about 20% of veterans who struggle with PTSD after war will turn to drugs and alcohol, with combat exposure increasing these rates.
