Substance use disorder (SUD) affects millions of individuals across the United States, including those who serve our country. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, approximately 1 in 15 veterans struggles with problematic drug or alcohol use.

Both active-duty servicemembers and veterans face significant challenges that make seeking help difficult: zero tolerance policies, fear of disciplinary action or loss of promotions, and stigma in a culture where admitting a problem is seen as a weakness.

Military members battling Substance Use Disorder already have too many barriers to treatment – insurance coverage does not have to be yet another obstacle.

Whether you’re an active-duty service member, veteran, or family member, access to quality treatment is crucial for long-term recovery. Fortunately, TRICARE insurance coverage for drug and alcohol rehab ensures that military families have access to the professional care they need.

At Tulip Hill Healthcare, we are proud to partner with TRICARE to provide personalized, evidence-based treatment options in Kentucky and Tennessee for those struggling with addiction. Our comprehensive rehab programs are designed to heal the body, mind, and spirit – because we believe recovery is possible for everyone, no matter how long they have been struggling.

Understanding Substance Use Disorder (SUD)

Substance use disorder (SUD) is a condition where an individual is unable to control their use of substances such as alcohol, opioids, or other drugs, despite the negative impact on their life, health, and relationships.

The consequences of addiction often go beyond physical health issues; individuals with SUD frequently face psychological, emotional, and social challenges that complicate recovery.

Moreover, SUD is often linked to co-occurring mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, trauma, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Because addiction and mental health disorders are intertwined, it is essential to treat both aspects simultaneously for successful recovery.

At Tulip Hill Healthcare, we specialize in a dual diagnosis approach, which addresses both addiction and any underlying mental health issues. Our experienced team of clinicians works together to create personalized treatment plans that cater to the unique needs of each individual, offering a comprehensive recovery experience that provides the best possible chance for long-term sobriety.

Understanding TRICARE Insurance Coverage for Drug and Alcohol Rehab

TRICARE is the health care program for active-duty military members, National Guard and Reserve members, retirees, their families, and survivors. Administered by the U.S. Department of Defense, TRICARE offers a wide range of behavioral health services, including treatment for substance use disorders.

What TRICARE Covers for Substance Use Disorder Treatment

TRICARE’s SUD benefits are extensive and can cover:

All services must be provided by a TRICARE-authorized provider, like Tulip Hill Healthcare, and be deemed medically or psychologically necessary.

Here is a closer look at the TRICARE drug rehab services in Tennessee and Kentucky offered by Tulip Hill Healthcare.

What Is Medically-Supervised Detoxification?

TRICARE covers drug and alcohol detox.

The first step in many recovery journeys is detoxification. Medically-assisted detox helps individuals safely rid their bodies of harmful substances. This process can be physically demanding and in some cases, dangerous, so it is essential that it be done under professional supervision to ensure safety and comfort.

Tulip Hill Healthcare offers two types of detox programs to fit your needs:

  • Medically-supervised detox offers 24-hour clinical supervision by a compassionate team of healthcare professionals – doctors, nurses, and addiction specialists. In some cases, medication is used to ease withdrawal symptoms and ensure a more comfortable detoxification process.
  • Non-medical detox focuses on counseling and lifestyle changes, preparing you for the next steps in your recovery. This approach can be particularly beneficial if you have a less severe dependency.

Both detox programs are designed to help you begin your recovery on the right foot, with a focus on safety, comfort, and long-term success.

NOTE: It is never recommended for you to attempt to detox or quit “cold turkey” on your own. ALWAYS seek professional support when trying to stop alcohol or drug use.

TRICARE covers residential alcohol and drug rehab.

Also known as inpatient treatment, residential rehab is the highest level of addiction care. It typically lasts 30 days and should happen immediately after detoxing.

You receive treatment in a private live-in facility, and you can completely focus on your recovery without the temptations, stresses, and other challenges that could complicate your recovery or trigger a relapse.

Inpatient services include:

  • A Quiet, Substance-Free, and Supportive Environment
  • Individual Counseling
  • Group Therapy
  • Medication Management
  • Life Skills
  • Healthy Coping
  • Relapse Prevention and Response
  • Holistic Therapies
  •  24-Hour Monitoring and Support

After establishing a firm foundation in residential drug rehab, the best way to continue progressing in recovery is to enroll in the right outpatient program.

What Is Dual Diagnosis Treatment at Tulip Hill Healthcare?

TRICARE covers dual diagnosis treatment.

Many individuals with SUD also struggle with co-occurring mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety, or trauma. If these issues are not addressed during the recovery process, they can interfere with long-term sobriety and relapse prevention.

Dual diagnosis treatment at Tulip Hill Healthcare utilizes an integrated approach that addresses both substance use and mental health conditions simultaneously. This holistic method of treating the whole person is vital to helping you achieve long-term recovery and emotional health.

Mental Health Counseling and Dual Diagnosis Treatment

If you are struggling with an emotional or behavioral disorder, you are not alone. According to the National Institute on Mental Health, nearly 1 in 5 adults lives with some sort of mental illness, such as:

  • Anxiety
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Bipolar Disorder,
  • Depression
  • Disordered Eating
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Personality Disorders
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

1 in 16 US adults struggles with at least one serious mental illness severe enough to interfere with their ability to perform daily life activities.

Tulip Hill Healthcare offers a variety of treatment programs to address your mental health struggles. We personalize your care services to meet your needs as an individual, using such evidence-based strategies as:

  • Individual Counseling
  • Group Therapy
  • Medication Management
  • Family Therapy
  • Trauma-Informed Care
  • Holistic Therapies –  Acupuncture, yoga, mindfulness meditation, art/poetry therapy, equine therapy, among others (NOTE: TRICARE will pay for some, but not all, holistic therapies, on a case-by-case basis)

Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Very often, addiction co-occurs with mental illness – according to NAMI statistics, half of all people with mental illness also struggle with substance abuse. Likewise, a third of alcoholics and half of all drug abusers also have a mental disorder.

This is called a “dual diagnosis”, and it can complicate treatment because each type of illness worsens and is worsened by the other. At Tulip Hill Healthcare, our approach is to treat these co-occurring disorders simultaneously, using a combination of therapies.

We do this because addiction and mental illness are intertwined and share many causal factors, including genetics, environment, and trauma. Treating the dual diagnosis as interlinked conditions allows us to identify and address the root issues quickly and more effectively.

To discuss your specific situation and your best options, schedule an assessment with your nearest Tulip Hill Healthcare TRICARE-covered MAT program in Tennessee or Kentucky.

Veteran-Specific and Military-Sensitive Rehab Services

Many veterans face unique psychological and emotional challenges after service, including:

  • PTSD – 1 in 4 female vets and 1 in 7 male vets
  • Chronic pain – Resulting in higher rates of depression, self-medicating, and suicide
  • Difficulty transitioning to civilian life – Relating to civilians, reconnecting with family, joining a new community, finding a job – these challenges can contribute to stress, anxiety, depression, and self-medicating with alcohol or drugs.

At Tulip Hill Healthcare, we offer:

Our staff includes professionals trained in military culture, and many are veterans themselves. We know what you’re going through and are here to help you heal.

Active-Duty Service Members

  • Must receive a referral from a primary care manager (PCM)
  • Treatment must be coordinated through the Military Health System
  • Emergency detox and stabilization are covered immediately

Veterans

While TRICARE is typically not available after active-duty retirement unless under TRICARE for Life or Reserve Select, veterans may qualify through VA benefits. Tulip Hill Healthcare coordinates with VA programs to find the best path to care.

Military Dependents

  • No referral is needed for outpatient mental health or substance use treatment with in-network providers like Tulip Hill Healthcare

What Is Medication-Assisted Treatment at Tulip Hill Healthcare?

TRICARE covers Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT).

Within the addiction recovery community, Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is considered to be the most effective way to save lives and improve recovery outcomes among people with SUD, particularly among people who abuse opioids such as heroin, fentanyl, and prescription painkillers.

Of special relevance, over 79% of Kentucky’s 1,984 overdose deaths in 2023 involved fentanyl. Similarly, more than 75% of Tennessee’s 3,616 fatal overdoses that same year also involved what has been called the “deadliest drug in America”.

MAT involves combining traditional psychotherapy with approved anti-addiction medications. MAT – the “gold standard” of substance abuse treatment – works because the medications reduce the overpowering drug cravings that trigger a relapse. Some MAT drugs completely block the effects of illicit substances.

Other benefits of MAT, include:

  • Decreased drug use
  • 25% fewer patient deaths
  • More patients stay in treatment
  • Reduced criminal activity
  • Better ability to find and maintain employment
  • Fewer complications among pregnant women who use drugs
